MESSAGE FROM THE REVD FRANY LONG

Frany Long was  licensed as  Priest- in-Charge of the parishes of St Swithun's, Purley and St Mark's, Woodcote in February 2008 and is now well established in both parishes. In the Summer 2008 Newsletter to every household in the Parish of St Swithun, Frany send the following message:

Hi!

My name is Frany Long and I’m your  Priest in Charge at St. Swithun’s Church.  I hope that in the coming months I will get to meet some of you as our paths cross, not only within St. Swithun’s but also at various meetings, schools, functions and occasions out in the parish. St. Swithun’s plays an important role within the life of our community. It is a growing and active church with an exciting future and stands as a beacon of hope and a sign of Gods love here in Purley. It is your church and whether you regularly come to services on a Sunday, use the hall once a week, want to have your child baptised, or just pass the church on the way to work, may God’s blessing be upon you day by day.

OUR CURATES

The Revd Frany Long was joined in October 2008 by  Revd Nichola Riches, part time Curate for both parishes.  In September 2009 Revd Nichola was ordained Priest at Southwark Cathedral and a joint celebration for her first Eucharist was held at St Mark's onSunday October 4th.  On July 4th a new full time curate, Kathryn Percival,  will be ordained at Southwark Cathedral and join the clergy team soon after.

CHRISTMAS EVE CRIB SERVICE

A large congregation of children with friends and relations made this service special, and one of the most popular of our Christmas season.  The service concluded with the lighting of candles and gathering around the crib.

NEW ALTAR FRONTAL

A magnificant new altar frontal was dedicated at a special service and reception on November 15th, 2009 at which some 70 people attended. Taking over a year to complete by a team headed by Jill Bingham, the frontal is to be used for the Lenten season in the run up to Easter.  The project was made possible by  a generous bequest from a parishioner.

PARISH CONSULTATION UPDATE

In  May 2009 a Parish Meeting was held to discuss the findings of a  consultation on the future pattern of our Sunday services. The core issue was the sustainability of  two main Sunday morning services with limited clergy availability.  This consultation has led to a new pattern of services detailed in the ' Worship Times' section of this website.  With the arrival of a full time curate later in 2010 and Diocesan Missioners to assist  the Priest in Charge, there should be exciting developments by year end!

PLANT SALE

Last May a fundraising plant sale held in the Church Hall was a great success, with over £300 raised for the causes supported by St Swithun's. The 2010 Plant Sale will be held in the Church Hall on Sunday May 2nd from 9:30 until 12:30. Donations of plants are welcome. Call Robert on 020 8660 1026 to arrange collection.

AUTUMN FAIR

The Autumn Fair was held on October 3rd in the newly refurbished Church Hall  and was a great success.  On offer were a craft stall, plant stall, children activities,  dancing demonstration, cake stall, raffle and a photographic competition judged by Hayley Long.  Over £1600 was raised for the charities supported by the parish.

The prizewinners in the 2009 photographic competition were:
